sauti za busara – African Music Festival- Tanzania

During our visit to Tanzania we went to the African Music Festival sauti za busara, taking place on Zanzibar. The festival area was inside the old fort of Stone Town. Me and my husband were there two of the festival days, Friday and Saturday.

One of the bands we saw on Friday was a Swedish (I know, right?) band called Tarabband, with a very charismatic singer. They played Arabic music mixed with other influences and it’s so interesting I think to listen to those kind of new versions of traditional music. I was very happy to have come all this way to discover a Swedish band! On their website they have the tag line: Arabic music from Sweden.

Apart from this band there were a lot of other awesome bands. One I really enjoyed was this artist called Wunmi. The music is described as afrobeat/dance and it was totally some groove in that music making you want to dance!

Here I pose inside the fort. On Saturday the weather was dry and hot, so it was possible to sit on the grass a while, of course later on just dance with the rest of our friends! And in this photo I wear a second hand bag, let’s not forget to mention.

My sweet husband that gave me all the pictures from the festival from his phone to make this post (thanks!). And yes, it was a lovely festival as you can see from the pictures, you can almost feel the atmosphere.

Oy was a spectacular band that are Berlin based, from Swiiss/Ghana (hello, multiculture). They were amazing. A drummer and a vocalist. The vocalist called Joy was working the loop pedal crazy! Oh, I loved it.

This technique is done with a loop pedal and gives you the opportunity to record layers of music and store them at different channels so you can loop them on stage. You can use microphone or other instruments of your choice. Hell, it doesn’t even have to be an instrument! You can record any “plonck” or “clonk” of your choice. After making a background with those layers you can sing the lead melody. The songs were also like storytelling and this band surely turned on curiosity. Also, I love seeing women approaching sound techniques, since I am such a nerd myself.
